These highlights of the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president, Andrew Dickson White, who had a fascination with both American history and book collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington and his era formed an integral part of White’s educational vision. Despite subsequent transformations in the discipline, White’s principle remains resonant: collecting, displaying, and teaching with rare books, autographs, signatures, and portraits make history tangible and alive.
