About this event
Are you nuts about nuts? Stoked about oaks? These collections in the F. R. Newman Arboretum are very special. Take a tour to learn why!!
This tour will explore the history, varieties, and uses that make nut and oak trees so popular. Find out why nut trees, which include numerous species of walnuts and chestnuts, were the first trees planted in the Arboretum. Learn how nuts are used in various cultures and about the many unique products made from acorns. Cornell Botanic Gardens is part of a group of national institutions committed to conserving oaks. Come along and discover the special properties of oaks that are allowing them to take over the world’s forests.
Prepare to walk about ½ mile going uphill on a gently sloping paved road or on mowed grass. Tours are offered rain or shine but may be cancelled in the event of severe or hazardous weather. Please come prepared for the weather. Pre-registration required as space is limited. Register here.
Fee: $12 general admission; Free for Cornell Botanic Gardens Access Pass holders and Cornell Students.
Instructors: David Weinstein, Forest Ecologist and Senior Research Associate Emeritus, Department of Natural Resources & the Environment, Christina Stark, Senior Extension Associate Emerita, Division of Nutritional Sciences, and Karen Edelstein, Environmental Cartographer and Naturalist.
Location: Meet at the second parking area as you enter the Arboretum from Caldwell Road. Click here for a Google map showing meeting location. Additional free parking is available nearby.
