Intermediate Linux (COMPLECS)

Event details Date: Thursday, July 9, 2026 Time: 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Location: Online Type: Academic Audience: Staff and Faculty, Students, Undergraduate, Graduate and Professional About this event Knowledge of Linux is indispensable for using advanced CI. While GUIs are becoming more prevalent, being able to work at the command line interface (CLI) provides the greatest power and flexibility. In this session, we assume that participants are already comfortable with basic Linux operations such as creating, deleting and renaming files, and navigating between directories. Topics covered include the filesystem hierarchy, file permissions, symbolic and hard links, wildcards and file globbing, finding commands and files, environment variables and modules, configuration files, aliases, history and tips for effective Bash shell scripting. --- COMPLECS (COMPrehensive Learning for end-users to Effectively utilize CyberinfraStructure) is a new SDSC program where training will cover non-programming skills needed to effectively use supercomputers. Topics include parallel computing concepts, Linux tools and bash scripting, security, batch computing, how to get help, data management and interactive computing. Each session offers 1 hour of instruction followed by a 30-minute Q&A. COMPLECS is supported by NSF award 2320934. --- Instructor Biography: Yuwu Chen, Ph.D., Computational & Data Science Research Specialist, SDSC, received his Ph.D from Louisiana State University in chemical engineering with an emphasis on molecular dynamics simulation of proteins. Yuwu’s key responsibility is to provide a high degree of HPC customer support and professionalism to the research communities of UCSD and other institutions.
